HAVE YOUR SAY ON MARKETS IN REMOTE COMMUNITIES, SAYS MP

North West Durham MP Pat Glass is encouraging local residents and businesses to respond to a fact-finding review launched by The Office of Fair Trading to understand more about the challenges facing consumers and businesses in remote communities across the UK.

The UK’s consumer and competition body is calling for evidence from the public in these areas to help inform its work.

Pat Glass MP said:

Prices of many goods and services are frequently higher in rural and remote areas, there can be fewer suppliers available, and access to key services such as post offices, banks and public transport can be more limited. Fuel prices, particularly heating oil for those in areas that are off gas, are a common cause of concern.

“I would encourage local residents and businesses to respond to the OFT’s review in order to make their views known and help inform the review. “

The OFT will look at evidence and experience from across the entire UK and will explore how other countries address specific market issues arising in isolated communities.

Kyla Brand, OFT Director, said:

‘Geography and population density can have a major impact on the cost and accessibility of goods and services to consumers, and on how businesses operate. We want to get a clearer picture of these issues and understand and explain some of the reasons behind them. We also want to explore what the OFT, or other bodies could do to reduce the downsides, and maximise the benefits of remoteness.’

Consumers and businesses wishing to contribute to the study are requested to send their views before 20 April to the OFT Office in Scotland, 23 Walker Street, Edinburgh EH3 7HX, fill in an online form at www.oft.gov.uk/remcom, or email remotecommunities@oft.gsi.gov.uk

The OFT expects to publish the outcome of this call for evidence by July.

Pat Glass MP Visits Crook Salvation Army

North West Durham MP Pat Glass visited Crook Salvation Army on Wednesday this week.

During the visit Pat met with service users and staff. She also had a meeting with Lieutenant Mark Anderson (pictured above), Crook Salvation Army manager and Durham County Councillor for Crook South Eddie Tomlinson to discuss the growing demand for Salvation Army services and youth issues.

Speaking after the visit, Pat Glass MP said:

“I was pleased to visit Crook Salvation Army and hear about the good work they are doing for the local community.

“I would like to thank Mark and the rest of team for their time and showing me around.

“It comes as no surprise to hear of the growing demand for the services they provide. The cost of living crisis and high levels of unemployment are affecting many households across the country and we are acutely aware of that in the North East, with many families feeling the squeeze and struggling to make ends meet because of an out of touch Tory-led government that is not focused on jobs and growth.”

SHARE THE WARMTH IN NORTH WEST DURHAM

The cost of living has gone up over recent years, and faster than what earning have. In this economic environment it’s hard for families to make ends meet. One of the areas that people can face difficulty is energy. However, with energy prices rising people don’t need to face higher bills. Through energy efficiency people can save money. Insulating a home by filling a cavity, or a loft, can save a household around £175 a year. Most energy companies will offer their customers free insulation; you just need to call them.

But there are those people that need that bit more help. The really vulnerable. Not only do they struggle with their bills, but they are also the least likely to come forward to get help. Help that is readily available. This is when communities can come into their own. If you have a friend, or a relative, or just an elderly neighbour, why don’t you see if they are getting their homes made warmer.

British Gas recently announced their “Share the Warmth” offer. If you find someone that meets their criteria for insulation, they’ll give you £50 for your troubles. They’ll also insulate the house of the vulnerable customer, and then give them £50 as well. Neither of you even needs to be a British Gas customer. All you need do is get your friend or relative to call 0800 975 1195, let them know you referenced them, and the get paid.

This is a great opportunity for our community to come together and help those that need help. I hope you’ll be able to find some who can access this programme. To find out more about visit www.sharethewarmth.co.uk

Pat Glass MP ‘Speaks Out’ against prejudice by signing Holocaust Memorial Day Book of Commitment

This week Pat Glass MP signed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons, in doing so pledging her commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day and honouring those who died during the Holocaust.

Friday January 27th will mark the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp which is the site of the largest mass murder in history – and in the weeks running up to the day, the Holocaust Educational Trust placed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons, giving MPs the chance to honour those who were persecuted and killed during the Holocaust and encouraging constituents to actively speak out against prejudice and bigotry today.

In signing the Book of Commitment Pat Glass MP paid tribute to the extraordinary men and women who having survived the Holocaust, work to educate young people about what they endured, through the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Outreach programme.

In the weeks around Holocaust Memorial Day, thousands of commemorative events will be arranged by schools, faith groups and community organisations across the country, remembering all the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. This year, people will also be encouraged to take a stand against racism and prejudice today – and to speak out against hatred wherever they encounter it.

Pat Glass MP said:

“Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau – and is an important opportunity to remember the victims of genocide. I encourage all constituents to mark the day and to commit to ’speaking up and speaking out’ against prejudice today.”

Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said:

“We are proud that Pat Glass MP is supporting Holocaust Memorial Day this year. It is vitally important that we both remember and learn from the appalling events of the Holocaust – as well as ensuring that we continue to challenge all forms of bigotry.”

PAT GLASS MP: BE BEWARE OF TELEPHONE SCAMS

A constituent telephoned me recently and informed me that they received a call from a company alleging they were telephoning to resolve a technical problem on her computer. The constituent had not made any such calls asking for this type of support and was concerned this was an attempt to defraud her.

Research on the Internet suggests that a fraud exists that an adviser will talk the customer through a scan using software they recommend is installed onto the computer, which reveals that a virus exists on their computer system. The customer is then asked to purchase a program to fix this problem. The scam is that the program used to scan your machine erroneously indicates a virus exists when it does not. Often it is vulnerable people, such as someone who is elderly or disabled who are most at risk of these scams.

Below are some pointers to be aware of that could alert you to a possible attempt to defraud you. There are many different ways a scam could be tried via the telephone but most will involve many of the points below;

• Is the call unsolicited (also known as a ‘cold call’)?
• Are you urged to make a quick decision?
• Do you have to pay a fee for a prize, or ring a ‘09’ number (premium) for more information?
• Are you asked for your address, date of birth or bank/credit card details?

Falling victim to a scam can be upsetting, embarrassing and in some cases very expensive so always proceed with care and if you have any concerns, or you simply do not wish to purchase whatever you are being offered during the cold call, end the call immediately.
