Character.AI Pricing 2026: Free Tier, c.ai+ and the Charms System
Last updated: 14 July 2026
Character AI is still free to open and use. What that free tier actually gives you has narrowed a lot since 2022, and understanding why takes more than reading the pricing page.
The short version
| Free | c.ai+ ($9.99/mo) | |
|---|---|---|
| Messaging | Capped swipes/regenerations per day | Higher priority, faster responses |
| Ads | Full-screen, mid-conversation | None |
| Queue at peak times | Standard wait | Skips the line |
| Voice calls | Not included | Included |
| Newest models | Delayed access | Early access |
| Charms | Earn or buy to top up limits | Needed far less often |
What's actually free
Character creation, browsing the library, and chatting with any character all still cost nothing to start. What changed is what happens once you're a few minutes in: full-screen ads now interrupt conversations on the free tier, and message regenerations, the "swipe" that rerolls a reply you don't like, are capped account-wide at a few hundred a day. For a casual user that ceiling rarely bites. For anyone with the platform's average session length of roughly 75 minutes, it shows up fast.
c.ai+: what $9.99 a month buys you
The subscription runs $9.99 monthly or $94.99 annually, which works out to about $7.92 a month if you pay yearly. It removes ads outright, lifts the swipe cap, moves you to the front of the queue when servers are busy, and adds voice calls and early access to new models, including Imagine Gallery's image generation. None of it changes the content policy — that's fixed for every tier, which we cover in the safety guide.
Charms: the currency that showed up in 2026
Charms sit between the free and paid tiers. You earn them through daily logins, enabling notifications, or posting to the community feed, or you can buy them outright. They spend on refilling swipes, pausing ads for a stretch, or generating images and short video clips. Refill pricing has run around 175 Charms for 35 swipes up to 1,000 Charms for 250, which is a real cost even if no money changes hands directly, since your time is the currency you're actually spending to earn them. Reddit's read on the whole system, expressed loudly and often, is that three separate restrictions landing within about ten weeks of each other — ads, then swipe caps, then model gating — felt less like normal freemium evolution and more like a deliberate squeeze.
Regional pricing isn't the same everywhere
c.ai+ doesn't cost the same $9.99 worldwide. Reported figures have ranged from around $3.56 a month in lower-cost markets to over $13 in parts of Europe, a spread of close to three times between the cheapest and most expensive regions. If you're price-sensitive, it's worth checking the in-app price for your own account rather than assuming the US figure applies.
Is it worth paying for?
For daily users, yes, in our view — the ad removal and swipe cap alone tend to pay for themselves in reduced friction, and the annual plan is a genuine discount if you're confident you'll stick around. For someone who checks in once a week, the free tier plus the occasional Charm top-up is probably enough, and there's no reason to subscribe just because the ads are annoying if you're barely seeing them.
How this compares to other companion pricing
A flat monthly subscription without a secondary currency to manage is a simpler model, and it's the one most adult-companion platforms use instead, including Seduced AI. Whether that simplicity matters more to you than Character AI's much larger character library is really the whole decision. We lay the two models side by side in our Character.AI vs Seduced AI comparison, or browse the wider field in our alternatives guide.
